I usually wait until the last minute to pass the good word, and this time everything just fell into place for my departure. I was scheduled to come home 8 Sep or so but I am actually leaving early for once! My crew is beginning our journey around the world in about an hour. We SHOULD be home in a day or two depending on how things go. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and birthday wishes. This has been a very rewarding trip but I am ready to come home.
All things told, in two months my crew flew 90 hours on 102 sorties and took 91 people to medical care. At home station I normally fly about 25 hours a month...we almost doubled that here. Our missions varied from a 5 minute flight to pick up a British soldier who lost both legs in an IED explosion to a 1.5 hour flight for a 6 year old local girl with a cracked skull (also IED) to an 80 yr old man with a gun shot wound and everything in between. I have picked up Americans, Canadians, Dutch, British, Afghan civilians, National Army, and Police. Some of the injuries are kind of humorous (which I won't get into over email) and some are heart-breaking (like a 13 year old with 3rd degree burns over his entire body).
This has been a fantastic way to end one chapter of my life. When I get home I am pretty much heading straight into Test Pilot School prep courses and will be TDY for most of the fall. We are hoping to move to Maryland in early December and I start TPS in January.
Thanks again for the support.
Wayne
